More than ever, the skills we need to build our region and our state are learned at TAFE. The Free TAFE for Priority Courses reduce the financial barrier for students wanting to train in courses that lead to jobs in demand from Victorian employers. Students can train in courses that lead to jobs in demand from Victorian employers.
Free TAFE for priority courses began on 1 January 2019. At the end of its first year more than 39,700 students had commenced in Free TAFE courses across the TAFE network.
In January 2020, two new early childhood courses were added to the Free TAFE course list. From Semester Two 2020, four new Free TAFE courses are being added in priority areas with in-demand jobs. The additional Free TAFE places are being provided to support individuals affected by coronavirus (COVID-19).
Free TAFE for Priority Courses covers tuition fees for priority courses for students who are eligible for government-subsidised training. This includes:
- 30 priority non apprenticeship courses
- 20 Victorian apprenticeship pathway courses (sometimes called pre apprenticeships)
Free TAFE courses lead to occupations in industries where there are likely to be more jobs and possibilities for career progression into the future.
